Residents for Resilience (R4R)

Filling the Information Gap — Science, Community Voices, and Resilience in Action

Who We Are

Residents for Resilience (R4R) is a South Florida-based nonprofit leading efforts to advance science- and nature-based solutions to some of our region’s most urgent environmental challenges.

From safe, clean drinking water to flood mitigation, stormwater management, and waterway and marine ecosystem restoration, our work is focused on protecting both public health and

the ecosystems that sustain our communities.

Founded by environmental advocate Suzee Bailey,

R4R was built on a simple but powerful belief:

“It’s hard to care about what you don’t know about.”

Our Mission

To fill critical information gaps by advancing science- and nature-based solutions that protect public health, improve water quality, strengthen flood resilience, and restore natural ecosystems—while empowering communities through education, communication, advocacy, and collaboration.

What We Do

R4R operates at the intersection of science, policy, and community, serving

as a trusted connector between:

  • Scientists and engineers

  • Government leaders and policymakers

  • Business and industry

  • And the communities most impacted

We translate complex environmental challenges into clear, accessible, and actionable information—while working to ensure that solutions are implemented, not just discussed.

Driving Real Impact

Residents for Resilience is not only raising awareness—we are actively

helping shape outcomes and advance solutions.

Our work includes:

  • Advocating for nature-based solutions, including efforts that prioritize preserving natural systems over less sustainable development approaches

  • Championing transparent, user-friendly water quality and sediment data, particularly in response to projects such as the Port Everglades Sand Bypass

  • Advocating for clearer public health protections, including more visible and accessible water quality warning signage at recreational sites when testing reflects unsafe conditions

  • Advancing improved public communication around boil water notices, particularly in high-traffic and tourist areas where many individuals may not receive traditional city alerts

  • Leading informed discussions on artificial turf (“plastic grass”), including public health, environmental, and stormwater impacts

  • Supporting and convening multiple waterway remediation pilot projects, currently in development, active collaboration, or awaiting funding

R4R has already helped secure the installation of water quality signage at select

Fort Lauderdale testing sites that consistently show elevated bacteria levels.

While current signage directs users to the Swim Guide app via QR code, we continue

to advocate for more prominent, clearly visible warning signage that directly

communicates potential health risks to the public.

Through these efforts, R4R is elevating the importance of accessible, timely public health

information—while continuing to push for stronger systems that protect both residents and visitors.

Key Advocacy & Impact Highlights

  • Advocated for preservation-focused solutions in key development discussions, including support for maintaining natural systems such as mangroves

  • Advanced public awareness and dialogue around the Port Everglades Sand Bypass and associated water quality concerns

  • Successfully pushed for initial water quality signage at high-risk recreational sites—while continuing to advocate for stronger warning systems

  • Leading regional conversations on artificial turf impacts, including heat, environmental, and stormwater considerations

  • Convening and supporting multiple waterway remediation pilot projects, in partnership with scientists, engineers, and local stakeholders

Collaborative Solutions in Action

We believe the most effective solutions come from working together.

R4R actively brings together business leaders, government agencies, scientists, engineers, and the public to identify and advance practical, scalable solutions.

These collaborative efforts focus on:

  • Innovative flood mitigation tools

  • User-friendly water remediation technologies

  • Cost-effective drinking water filtration solutions

  • Nature-based shoreline and ecosystem restoration strategies

From initiatives such as biochar-based filtration applications (“socks for your docks”) and oyster restoration systems, to broader living shoreline strategies, R4R is helping bridge the gap between emerging science and real-world implementation.

Partnerships That Drive Progress

R4R collaborates with leading Florida universities and research institutions—including the University of Miami, Florida International University, University of Florida, Florida Atlantic University, and Nova Southeastern University—as well as environmental organizations, local governments, and community stakeholders.

Together, we are advancing solutions that connect research, policy, and real-world implementation.

Our Reach & Momentum

Residents for Resilience has reached thousands of residents, stakeholders, and community members through public outreach events, speaking engagements, digital communications, and collaborative initiatives.

Our growing network includes:

  • Scientists and engineers

  • Environmental organizations

  • Government agencies and advisory boards

  • Business leaders and community advocates

Together, we are building a more informed, engaged, and more resilient South Florida.

Why This Work Matters

South Florida is on the front lines of climate-related challenges—from flooding and sea-level rise to declining water quality.

Yet too often, residents and visitors are left without clear, accessible, and timely information.

R4R is working to change that—by filling the information gap and ensuring communities are not only informed, but empowered to be part of the solution.
